Since 1996, Chris served lead roles for 45 PC freeware games (best, archives), made 219 experimental projects (played by more than 380,000 visitors and featured on JayIsGames), contributed to games for every major modern console (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii), co-architected an online game creation tool (PlayCrafter.com), and developed one of the top-selling games for the iPhone (Topple, voted a Top 10 iPhone game by Wired readers, with millions of downloads). He also designed and developed a game for a solar company, which has had more than 185,000 plays worldwide and has been covered by Water Cooler Games for innovation in coupongaming.
Chris earned his Computer Science degree from Carnegie Mellon University. There he established the Game Creation Society, an undergraduate club that creates 14 videogames each year and has helped more than a dozen students land game industry internships and full-time positions. Chris led or assisted with the development of 18 student games. (A mid-point design doc from a student project and the resulting PC game are available for comparison.)
Chris's instructional experience includes giving a 9-lecture series on videogame creation (first and last presentation slides are available), two game design workshops, presenting industry perspectives at the CMU MOSAIC conference, giving 1-on-1 lessons resulting in an award-winning student game (1st place in MedRespond's ProjectGO), guest speaking for UC Berkeley's Videogames As Art class, and mentoring others on the art and industry of game creation. This past summer, Chris served as the Lead Instructor for Videogame Design at Camp Galileo in Palo Alto, training more than 70 5th-8th graders in videogame creation basics. His monthly lessons on hobby videogame development have 8,000 readers.
Chris recently completed three innovative iPhone/iTouch games: an extension of his minimalist interactive concept DarkPlace titled iZombie Death March, microphone-driven asynchronous multiplayer minigames in Games That Blow, and the surreal literature/action mashup Alice in Bomberland (gameplay trailer and screenshots are available). Before that, he self-published Burnit, an experimental iPhone toy downloaded to more than 145,000 devices.
